Y Tu Mama Tambien Review

It was another boring night in quarantine when I thought of the idea of watching a Latin American film. After watching Pans Labyrinth and Wild tales, two films in Spanish that I enjoyed very much, I figured their was more great movies out there that I was not watching because I don’t speak the language. So after looking at list of the greatest Latin American films, I found “Y Tu Mama Tambien” (“And your mom too” in English), a Mexican road trip coming of age film that incorporated sex within the comedy and drama.

directed by Alfonso Cuarón and starring Maribel Verdú, who played Mercedes in Pan’s labyrinth, the movie was very well done. It did a good job of incorporating Mexico and its politics around the plot. The story took place during 1999, where Mexico underwent drastic political change with the rise of Vicente Fox and his opposition to the Institutional Revolutionary Party which had had held the presidency for seven decades. Although the main characters saw protests and gathering happening around them, they seemed quite indifferent to the issues that were taking place. Instead they focused on their own issues involving drugs and infidelity, and by traveling far from home, seemed to be running away from their personal issues.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie for the most part. I found powerful meanings at some points and also found parts with little significance. At times I was confused by the plot and found some points slow but the film eventually shifted to an interesting scene or moment that caught my attention. I think that Y tu mama tambien is good movie to watch for those who are struggling with finding themselves or who are simply bored during quarantine.
